This area can also be called the Yangtze River Delta. It’s very strong economically- it is China’s biggest megalopolis. As the growth here has been so massive, it is not very common to meet natives in this region.

Shanghai Historical Background

A map of Shanghai in 1884; Chinese area are in yellow, French in red/pink, British in blue, American in orange.

Let’s focus a little more on Shanghai. Until 1842, Shanghai was a small fishing village. Then, Westerners entered and made Shanghai a great city. Notably, nearby Suzhou and Wuxi are 3000 Year old notable cities while Shanghai was nothing significant those 3000 years.  The Westerners recognized Shanghai as a great port location, and poured in. It instantly became a boom town as Chinese people poured in to this big Western invested new city. Now today, the Shanghai port is the biggest port in the world.

The Interior Developed Thousands of Years Ago

The interior part of this river delta has been rich for millennia. Because it is a delta, it is filled with delta streams. Even in ancient times, Chinese people were adding to these delta streams by building canals to connect them. They even made canals to the far reaches of the region. Boat transportation was dominant for millennia, and this place had the most developed water network in the world. They only served the domestic market except for tea and silk which grow in this region as well. China did not shipped out of Shanghai then at all. Much went on the long silk road.   Guangzhou in the far south was the only port city for 2200 years. It was known as Canton.   China only allowed Canton as a port as it was far from the capital, and the capital did not want to be polluted with foreign contact.

Now, back to the Shanghai region which was highly developed except for Shanghai for thousands of years. All this , the Westerners in 1842 and beyond were beneficiaries of, but they did not know this background.

Shanghai Opens For Business

The Bund Now

Thereafter, the boom town was a massive success, and massive buildings went up by the Western edge of the Huangpu river that divides modern Shanghai. Westerners called this development The Bund. Shanghai became the most Western and even capitalist city in all of China. It was also like the wild West, and the term shanghaied got coined.

In 1949, the curtain came down, and Shanghai was subjugated by the communists and tons of Shanghai people were sent to learn from the peasants in the interior. I lived In Bengbu in 1991-93, and visited Shanghai. To my great surprise, it was just like Bengbu. The same 6 story buildings and no fancy shops. Everything I could get in Shanghai, I could also get in much smaller Bengbu. Shanghai was simply more vast but not special.  I could not get a Coke there for example.  If there was a Friendship store there, I never saw it.

Dynamic Shanghai Returns

1994 restart with Oriental Tower

In 1996, I went back to Shanghai, and it was like China had completed a miracle. Dynamic Shanghai was back. The government had decided in 1991, that Shanghai had the best name recognition in the world for China, so China took money from all of China, and invested it in Shanghai. Suddenly, for the first time China built bridges and tunnels across the Huangpu river. They built raised highways like you could see no where else in China.  The Oriental Pearl Tower was complete as well as a compelling plan to develop Liujiazui with three fabulous high rise towers. China shocked me by the infrastructure it had built out of nothing in just 4 years.

Let the Games Begin

Shanghai was now open for business again and massive investment like the bridges and tunnels to the East side (Pudong) of the Huangpu opened up a massive green field to develop from zero. Additionally, China redeveloped the West side (Puxi) and cleared for new investment and with massive infrastructure investment.  The foreigners flocked to Shanghai, and nearby Suzhou also got in on the early action. In addition, Shanghai had the name and Suzhou had the Western service in that time. The whole river delta developed as investment spilled over from these.

At that time, I was in the thick of it introducing Western factories to these two cities and gradually to all the others.  It was quite a time.  I learned in the 90’s that investing in Shanghai was good as long as your leader was not from Shanghai. Shanghai people were the biggest and most talented scammers in China. For Shanghai people, I really needed to develop better background check methods. I did. They were and are way too savvy in interviews.

The region is more mature now as is the overall ability to falsify resumes and lie in interviews. Do not get me wrong. The Shanghai region does have lots of real talent as well. Companies come to us again and again to sort the wheat from the chaff.
