The ever quotable Collin Powell says:
Leadership is all about people. It is not about organizations. It is not about plans. It is not about strategies. It is all about people-motivating people to get the job done. You have to be people-centered.
Some people will say Leadership is about Decision making. Then the key decisions are who to get on your team. If you want to be great you need a great team. You need to hire great people and train and inspire them to great things. That is leadership. General Powell says so well that we need to be people-centered.
Chinese leaders are rarely people centered. Some have caught the ball and are great. How often have you seen a Chinese manager hire someone who is nearly as good as himself? Admittedly, I have never seen it. They are just not that self assured. They use people to buttress their position. This happens in the West too, but it is epidemic here.
Searching for Chinese GM’s is hard as they talk well but in truth are not comfortable with their own skin. Result is they are narrow and secretly self protective. They do not hire great people and help them thrive. The China business is about them. See also Executive Search in China – Not Easy.
