I read a long time ago that consultants read your watch to tell you the time. Having worked as a consultant in many fields including in this company, I find it to be quite true. Why can’t we read our own watch? Why do we need to pay someone to read it? This happens as we hire people who are not smart and honest, so we cannot see 20/20 in 2020. Usually, the consultant gets paid to see through all the fog in our company.
20/20 vision is to hire a team of people and get all the information from them. Surprisingly hard, but that is good vision. Think how hard it is to get there when people are working hard to make the business harder to understand. In life, and especially in recruiting, I learned that usually the truth is simple, and the lie is complicated.
Seeing 20/20 in 2020 A Path Forward
To see 20/20 in 2020, you first need to hire leaders who want to make things simple and make things clear to you. That basic heart is not so common unfortunately. From that, you need the smart people who are able to understand you and how to communicate with you. Further. They need to understand what is happening in their space. Some leaders do not want to hear the ugly truth. If you are one of them, then hiring well is a limited tool. I have found in China that especially with less experienced hires, you have to dig and create a lot of safety to get all the information out. The leaders you hire in China also have to do that. So mining for all the information is the next step to 20/20 in 2020.
