The Chinese YES and Commitments

Many of you likely know that a Chinese yes often means no. Chinese will often say what the boss wants to hear out of respect for or fear of the boss.  This is well known. When a contractor says “no problem” then you definitely have a problem as I have mentioned before.

You have heard that signing a contract can be the start of the negotiation. Let me tell you of one other.

Chinese people will sign a job offer and then keep searching for another position.  They will use your acceptance of them to entice others to make counter offers and to take interest.

Not all Chinese people do this, but it is quite common. I suggest you not hire people like this as they are too complicated for us Westerners.  It is even hard to have them as suppliers or customers.
